| » When do I need a joint replacement? |
When arthritis (from any cause) is causing you a disturbed quality of life and the pain is disabling you need a replacement.
We can help you decide but the pain is the main deciding factor.
Also people have different expectations in life so each one should make an independent decision for him/herself.
You are never late for a replacement but as you get older (more than 75) your recovery process is slower so if it is inevitable it is better to get it done when one is fitter. |
| » What is the ideal age? |
- Between 60 to 75.
- If you are older and fit then age is no criteria.
- If you are younger and in terrible pain then you may need it earlier(less than 60)
- What is the life of a joint replacement?
- For a knee it is about 15-20 years
- For a hip with newer materials can be about 20-25 years.

| » Can I sit on the floor and do namaz/vajrasan? |
- If you have a good movement before surgery then you will get a good movement after surgery.
- The range depends mainly on your range before. Besides this exercise and design of the joint play an important role.
- Sitting on the floor is not recommended as it causes faster wear and tear of the artificial joint. You may sit cross legged on the bed .
- Use your joint wisely and it will last you for a long time

| » How long does recovery take and how long will it pain me? |
- Usually knee replacement pain may last for 2-3 months and then gradually goes away.
- Pain also depends on your movement achieved, so the more you do initially with pain control the better you will do later.
- Take your pain medication if you have to in the post operative period so that you do more exercise so that you recover faster.
- You will need a walker for about 2-4 week followed by a stick for the same time
- Usually people can leave their stick in 2 months time
- There are exceptions to the rules with people recovering faster and some taking more time too.
- The pain of a hip replacement is less comparatively.

» Care after replacement surgery? |
- Prevent infection anywhere in the body and if you have treat it early.
- Especially avoid skin infections on the feet and legs
- For knee replacement you can sleep, turn and do what you want. It is a stable joint and will not cause you trouble.
- For hip replacement you should not sleep on the operated hip for 3 months. Keep a pillow between your legs when sleeping for 3 months and avoid crossing your legs Each case is different so speak to your doctor.

| » Care at home after discharge? |
- After the surgery you will be in the hospital for a week. At home you will need help initially.
- You will need a good ayah or wardboy to help with your bathroom activities.
- Your commode should be raised with an extension so that it is easier to use.
- Your bed could be lifted up on bricks if needed to make it easier to use.
- You will need a walker that was given in the hospital and a stick later
- Physiotherapy is needed in the 1st month and then can be gradually reduced.
- Stitches are removed after 2 weeks from surgery, we will arrange for this.
- You can have a bath after stitch removal

| » When do I follow up? |
Usually 6 weeks after surgery to check on the progress. Please bring all your papers at this time. |
| » What does my movement depend on? |
After surgery it is up to you .The more exercise you put in the more benefit you will get. What you achieve by 3 months will be what you movement you will have. So work hard in the first 3 months. |
| » Will the implant cause any reactions or will my body accept it? |
The materials used in joint replacement are of high-grade materials and tested. They have not and will not cause any problems. |
